Lisa and Abby Putnam
Past, Present & Future
Lake WI. A female Siberian Husky got “caught” but a possible Australian Sheppard. She
had 8 litter mates. We knew we wanted a female. The other girls in the litter were spoken for
on my lap. We needed a name. She had one blue eye and one brown. We were thinking of
a line in the Young Frankenstein movie. Abnormal. Hence “Abby” was named. Husky’s are
very independent so training had to stay positive and challenging. She loved to run and that
she did, at off leash dog parks. She knew I was packing treats so I could always get her on
the lead after our romp. We took our obedience training on a gentle leader. She learned
quick and lived to please so she was a wonder pupil. When I took a job as an activity
director at a nursing home, Abby became a Friday favorite visitor. She was adored by Staff
and residents alike.
She passed her TDI test and we were off and volunteering. We went to Regions hospital.
She had success in the Emergency Room waiting room, comforting a man out of having a
panic attack. She spent a week at Camp Courage with the MS Society. She worked the Pals
on Paws booth at the Pet expo. We visited my elderly mother every week and I could NOT
show up without the dog . Abby’s kidneys are failing and now take medication which keeps
her continent. It was time to retire. She still has the knack of comforting people. One
afternoon while waiting for my SUV’s oil change, the three men waiting all smiled at her. I
asked if they wanted a “pet visit”. They all said yes. I took her off her lead and she took turns,
sitting at the feet of the men for petting. She still loves the off leash dog park. She loves
rides in the car, cruising the aisles of Home Depot and Lowes.
There is no real finale here. Abby has transitioned
to tasks and other jobs around the Putnam
homestead, and laid the groundwork for Scudder,
Lisa's Golden Retriever to assume her role in the
AAA/AA-T arena.
