Melissa & Nova Winn
Go Dog Go.......
I have also had the opportunity to see some kids come to Paws to Read sessions more than
once and their improvement in reading and confidence. We have also had some special
appreciative of the children who read to her whether they are proficient readers enjoying some
time reading to a dog or if they are struggling with reading. This is all fine by Nova which is
what makes reading to dogs so supportive for young readers. I take away something special
makes them feel special just for being there with her. It is this kind of acceptance that I attempt
to add to my goal driving attitude. If Nova could talk, I think she would tell us ‘we have to be
where we are now to be anywhere’, and ‘being here is good’.
I think I have become more outgoing myself since we started volunteering. I have an
extroverted dog so we interact with people whether I am ready or not sometimes. I have
learned it is important to reach out to people a little more although the true artist of this
behavior is Nova.
Melissa Winn, Sr. Partner of Team Nova
Nova and Melissa have been a therapy team for almost five years. Currently members of the
North Star Therapy Animals Paws to Read. Team Nova is registered as a Pet Therapy Team
through the Delta Society Pet Partners and members of Read Education Assistance Dogs
(R.E.A.D). This team works in the Hennepin/Minneapolis Library system.
When Nova and I started visiting libraries in 2004, I
was concerned she would be too restless to sit for two
hours in the library. While occasionally she does get
restless, most of the time she is delighted to be
involved with the children who are reading to her or
visiting her on her way in and out of the library. It is fun
to see the kids enjoy reading to her. Some kids
become concerned if Nova falls asleep or they want to
be sure she sees the pictures in the book they are
reading. This attention is what Nova works for (along
with her treats).
