Do you remember having trading cards of Roger Maris?
|
Perhaps Mickey Mantle or more recent sports figures, but the cards have
expanded into a new arena.... K-9 dogs and therapy animals.
Initial exposure to this venue came with Captain Karen Carten. My first canine
card was of her partner BJ, who was dutiful present at the Race for the Cure at the
Mall of America. Since then, therapy colleagues have surfaced up with cards of
their "partners".
I will share with you that the kids love them, but they have also found favor with the
adults as well.
Our volunteer activities in the therapy world arena expose us all to many great
experiences and even some good stories My curiosity was strong enough to dig a
little deeper into the background of the trading cards, and Lee Wanglie who
tackled adversity and started a second career....

Lakeview Elementary School in Robbinsdale incorporates READ teams into their literacy program
|
With the holidays on the horizon, ten animals teams from North Star Therapy Animals tackled the bitter cold to participate in a reading program at Lakeview Elementary. Lakeview was one of the numerous schools that applied and received books for each child to choose and take home as their own. Ah yes, not before they got a head start on reading to one of the animals or the professional guests in attendance.

North to Alaska
Therapy Sibes recently participated in a nursing home /children's program at Ebenezer
(Bloomington) called North to Alaska. It was a well spent and meaningful afternoon for youth and
What did catch our attention was that these huskies reflected a common denominator many of their
canine colleagues represent.. Their journey is one that travels many different roads whether it be
conformation, obedience, or in this case also sled pulling. In addition to animal assisted activities
it's not on to see the canine partners involved with other extra curricular activities such has hunting,
agility, herding, as well as, yes the family pet and companion. That very special role.
Courthouse Dogs
A few years ago, the AKC Family Dog
magazine did an article on the use of
therapy dogs with children that for one
reason or another found themselves
within the legal system. The use of the
animals was initially used in the Florida
courts, but they are slowly continuing to
find favor in the system when deemed
appropriate.
