Do you remember having trading cards of Roger Maris?
|
Perhaps Mickey Mantle or more recent sports figures, but the cards have
expanded into a new arena.... K-9 dogs and therapy animals.
Initial exposure to this venue came with Captain Karen Carten. My first canine
card was of her partner BJ, who was dutiful present at the Race for the Cure at the
Mall of America. Since then, therapy colleagues have surfaced up with cards of
their "partners".
I will share with you that the kids love them, but they have also found favor with the
adults as well.
Our volunteer activities in the therapy world arena expose us all to many great
experiences and even some good stories My curiosity was strong enough to dig a
little deeper into the background of the trading cards, and Lee Wanglie who
tackled adversity and started a second career....

North to Alaska
Therapy Sibes recently participated in a nursing home /children's program at Ebenezer
(Bloomington) called North to Alaska. It was a well spent and meaningful afternoon for youth and
senior participants with plenty of great interaction.
What did catch our attention was that these huskies reflected a common denominator many of their
canine colleagues represent.. Their journey is one that travels many different roads whether it be
conformation, obedience, or in this case also sled pulling. In addition to animal assisted activities
it's not on to see the canine partners involved with other extra curricular activities such has hunting,
agility, herding, as well as, yes the family pet and companion. That very special role.
Courthouse Dogs
A few years ago, the AKC Family Dog
magazine did an article on the use of

animals was initially used in the Florida
courts, but they are slowly continuing to
find favor in the system when deemed
appropriate.

these handlers to see how trusting were these kindergarteners were
with the dogs. As positive as that may seem, it creates an issue when
one thinks of all the dogs they may encounter outside. Those loving
bear hugs may not be as well received. Opportunity prevails if you
consider offering a children's session on dog safety and responsible
dog ownership. Where? You need only to look at your neighborhood
community centers. If you save one child from a bite, it was worth the
effort.
