Minnesota Therapy Animals
“Transformation of the Heart”
-        Teri Pichot

Book Review by:  Patti Anderson –
( Delta Evaluator, Therapy Animal
Trainer at AHS and R.E.A.D. Instructor)
This book is a collection of stories about therapy dogs, the people they visit,
and their handlers that love them.  The stories have a unique spin in that they
not only address the impact therapy dogs have on the individuals they visit, but
how they have “healed the souls of their handlers”.

Teri Pichot (the author) has been a psychotherapist for twenty years and has
sought out stories that will have an impact on you whether you have a therapy
dog or not.  She has collected sixteen memorable tales about all types of dogs
with various backgrounds.  From Molly, the newfie mix, to Bobby Lee a totally
blind lab, their stories are as individual as their personalities and the challenges
they face.   The most profound impact these dogs have had though are in the
lives of their handlers.  The story about Susan, is one of these stories.  Susan’s
husband was tragically killed while on a family vacation. His dog named
Avalanche helped her through the deep depression she experienced as a result
of the sudden and tragic loss of her husband.  She and Avalanche eventually
became a visiting team at a local hospital and together they managed to work
through the grief and start to heal through giving to others.

The foreward is by Aubrey Fine (Author of the “handbook on Animal Assisted
Therapy).  He acknowledges the stories as being very moving and well written.

I especially enjoyed the Epilogue, called “The Gift of the Imperfect Dog” that
finished this compelling collection of stories on a personal note from the author.
This book is the “Chicken Soup” for therapy dogs and the people whose lives
are touched by them.
